You may have read recently about indoor air quality and wondered what it means and why it is important. The concept of cleaning the air in your home or building has been around for a long time, but because of COVID-19 more people have become aware of the importance and benefits of clean indoor air. Did you know that according to the Environmental Protection Agency, the air indoors can be more polluted than smog? Since most people spend 90 percent of their lives indoors this is now more important than ever.
There are many options for home and/or office air purifiers. These options include:
HEPA Technology
Removing particles from the air inside your home is the main job of a HEPA air purifier. HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air, which means that true HEPA filters have the highest efficiency possible and meet the strict standards set by the U.S. Department of Energy. A HEPA air purifier is outfitted with a HEPA filter which traps airborne particles and prevents them from floating around your home. HEPA filters must be able to capture 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns. (For reference, a human hair is 5 microns, which is 7 times the width of the smallest allergen!) HEPA air purifiers are most effective at trapping airborne particles such as viruses, bacteria, pollen, allergens, and more. They do not remove odors, chemicals, or gases.
Activated Carbon Technology
If you are interested in trapping airborne particles as well as unpleasant odors from tobacco smoke, cooking, pets, ozone, or other sources, carbon technology may be your best option. Carbon filters are most commonly used to remove gases from the air. Carbon technology has been around for a long time and has been used in many capacities, including purification of water and now air. They are very efficient at reducing pollutants in the air, but they are less effective at removing allergens and other airborne particles.
UV Technology
A UV light installed in an air purifying system helps eliminate airborne pathogens in the air by killing bacteria and viruses when they make contact with the light. UV lights in air purifiers will incinerate and destroy particles on initial contact, particularly microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, and mold spores. A filter traps a germ, an ultraviolet light kills it.
Bi-Polar Ionization
When people cough or sneeze, they send viral droplets through the air. An ionizer targets airborne viruses and their droplets. Bipolar ionization provides a huge range of benefits, including:
- Reduced mold particles and dust. No more sunbeams!
- Reduced odors from cooking, pets, and tobacco. Bipolar ions break down odors at their source and eliminate them.
- Reduced VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). Bipolar ions break down toxic gasses and compounds from dangerous chemicals such as cleaning products, pesticides, paints, mold, mildew and more.
- Reduced bacteria and viruses. The positive and negative ions kill germs.
- Reduced static electricity.
Healthier air, less dust, fresh smelling air, longer HVAC lifespan, and more. Alone those are compelling reasons to get a whole-home air purifier, but collectively they show how one investment with proven short-term and long-term benefits can not only add value to your home, but also contribute to the well-being of your family.
